Here is the best way to connect to Omsoft:
- A PPP connection - allows use of the Windows' graphical interface,
and lets you run several Internet (winsock) applications at one
time.
Getting the right software:
- To establish a PPP connection you need special software. You may
stop by Omsoft to pick it up. It is free if you can bring an empty
disk, otherwise, the cost is $1.
Configuring your PPP Connection Software:
- This is meant for users of Trumpet Winsock to connect via PPP. The
following guide outlines two methods of replacing your dialing script
file, manually and automatically, to be compatible with the new
56kbps-modem bank. If you would prefer to change your existing script,
there will soon be instructions in this techhelp area on the Omsoft
website. Remember, Save everything! Also, please make use of our helpful
links at the bottom of this page for further assistance with these
procedures.
Procedure 1 - This involves backing up your
current connection script file, called login.cmd, replacing it with the
new login.cmd in the attached email.
- Find the files; login.cmd, trumpwsk.ini, winsock.dll, and tcpman.exe
in the directory on your computer where Trumpet Winsock (usually
c:\trumpet or c:\netapps\trumpet or c:\dcnetapps\), your PPP connection
program, is loaded, and move the files onto a diskette or into a
temporary directory.
- Copy the following files from the diskette provided into your
Trumpet Winsock directory. You can do this by dragging the files and
pulling them to the C: icon on the toolbar or selecting copy from the
file pull down menu, and typing in the correct directory. the files to
copy into your trumpet winsock directory
are:
tcpman.exe winsock.dll login.cmd trumpwsk.ini config.exe config.ini
- Run the program tcpman.exe by double clicking on it in the
directory, and enter the information it asks you. One of three things
should happen; it will find your modem, dial up and connect giving you
an ip address. Two, it will give a modem not responding message. his
means that Trumpet is not set to look in the correct comm port for your
modem. You can find the correct comm port by running your old version of
tcpman.exe and looking in the setup area from the file pulldown menu.
Three, some other error or nothing at all will happen. This means that
the correct initialization string is not installed for your modem. Call
tech support at 758.0119 or 750.0101 in either of these cases.
- Dial in and check to make sure you login properly. If you find this
new script gives you problems, please remove the new scripts you have
just placed in the directory. Then rename the login.old to login.cmd and
trumpwsk.old to trumpwsk.ini This should allow you to connect to the
current Omsoft modem bank and get help.
Procedure 2 - This method involves using an executable file, config.exe, and its
partner, config.ini, to change your existing settings to dial the new
local access number 757-6552.
- Find the files; login.cmd and trumpwsk.ini in the directory on your
computer where Trumpet Winsock (usually c:\trumpet or c:\netapps\trumpet
or c:\dcnetapps\), your PPP connection program, is loaded, and save a
copy of them under new names login.old and trumpwsk.old
- Save or move the files, config.exe and config.ini from your Omsoft
TRANSITION email, into your Trumpet Winsock directory. Double click
config.exe to run the program; you will be prompted to enter your last
and first name. Please look over the menu to make sure all your settings
are correct, such as modem port and local access number (757-6552), then
select save and exit.
- Dial in and check to make sure you login properly. If you find you
are unable to log in, and have checked your config.exe settings, please
remove the new scripts you have made, login.cmd and trumpwsk.ini, and
rename login.old and trumpwsk.old to login.cmd and trumpwsk.ini, this
should allow you to login as before and find help.
Establishing a PPP connection:
- From the Windows Program Manager, open the Omsoft Internet PPP
Apps group.
- Run the TCP Manager. It will ask for your login ID (also known as
username) and password, then dial and connect to the PPP server. You
will see "Enter username>" repeated a number of times. This is normal
to make sure the modems are connecting properly.
- At some point, your username will be typed out, you'll see a
"Request>" prompt, and some other messages. Shortly after the
"Negotiating IP Address" message, you'll receive an IP address.
- Once you receive your IP address, you are ready to run any of the
other PPP applications, such as WSFTP, Telnet, or NewsExpress. You can
now minimize the TCP Manager window.
NOTE: DO NOT CLOSE THE TCP MANAGER AFTER IT IS CONNECTED!
It must remain open for your PPP applications to work. Minimize it (by
clicking the downward-pointing arrow-head button on the top right corner
of the window) to get it out of your way.
Disconnecting
- Log off from any host computer sessions (like a telnet to
wheel).
- Close any PPP applications you are running.
- Switch to the Trumpet Winsock program (CTRL-ESC, pick from
list).
- Select menu Dialer..Bye. You may need to do this more than once, if
your modem has difficulty hanging up.
- Wait 10-20 seconds for the modem to hang up.
- Select menu File..Exit.
- Wait 10-20 seconds for TCP Manager to exit and close.
